Inebriated man pokes wife with glowing fire
PRAKASH ADHIKARI DAILEKH, DEC 29

(Commets: Violence against women and children are rising in such a way that shockingly disturb our common sense. Inebriated men often indulge into wife battering and it is often taken usually in the society. Violence against women have gone beyond and strict laws must be formulated to protect women and children)
AT a time when cases of violence against women have seen an unprecedented rise, an inebriated man burnt his wife following a spat at Narayan Municipality-6 in the district on Friday night. Kamaro Sarki tortured his wife Chawali with a burning piece of wood, police said. The victim sustained serious burns in herprivate parts, thighs and buttocks. The neighbours rescued Chawali and took her to District Hospital immediately after the victim and her children cried for help. Local people and police suspect that the tipsy Kamaro might have assaulted his spouse with fire after she denied him sex. Police Inspector Binod Sharma suspects sex could be the main cause as the perpetrator had attacked the victim targeting her private parts. According to the victim, the incident took place while she had been waiting for her husband for dinner. “He suddenly attacked me with a burning piece of wood. I would be burnt to death had my neighbours not rescued me,” Chawala said at the hospital. Police took Kamaro into custody. He has refused any wrongdoing. He admitted that they had a minor dispute and that she was accidentally hit by the fire in the kitchen and got injured. The impoverished Sarki couple are daily wage earners. Sharma said the victim has frequently changed her statements apparently to protect her husband. He assured that the perpetrator would not be spared even if the victim refused to lodge a complaint. The case is said to have been forwarded as per the police report and the complaints registered by women rights organisations.

Police suspect family’s role
PAWAN YADAV BARA, DEC 28 (The Kathmadu Post)
Bindu’s slippers were found outside her house and an empty kerosene jar was also recovered from the house
INVESTIGATION into the death of teenage girl from Prastoka VDC-5 of Bara is turning into a muddled affair due to lack of details in the post-mortem report. While the police have initiated their probe assuming that the 16-year-old victim, Bindu Thakur, was murdered based on their preliminary finding, the post-mortem report provided by the District Hospital only states that she died of burn injuries and that there was a bruise on the back of her shoulder. Police Inspector Ramnath Ghimire said they had written to the hospital to provide every last detail like whether the victim was raped before her death, the time of her death and if there were any signs of injury other than the ones inflicted by burn. The hospital report was not satisfactory, he said. Meanwhile, a source at the hospital said the police had not written to them as claimed and that they could not furnish the details that were not asked for. Charred body of Bindu was found near her house on Wednesday morning. There were no sign of struggle on the scene. Ghimire said the victim had only a loose dress resembling undergarment on and there were no burnt clothes on the scene if she was wearing any. Bindu’s family members have been saying that she had left the house early in the morning for her tuition class and that they learnt about her death nearly an hour after her leaving. Her slippers were found outside the house and an empty kerosene jar was also recovered from the house. Police suspect that she was murdered by her own family members. Bindu’s father, Rama Thakur, was taken into custody on Thursday evening for interrogation. The victim’s mother and her two sisters were also held on Friday for questioning.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Pushpa Basnet is revealed Sunday night as the 2012 CNN Hero of the Year
  • Basnet supports children in Nepal so they don't have to live behind bars with their parents
  • For being named Hero of the Year, Basnet receives $250,000 to continue her work
(CNN) -- Pushpa Basnet, a Nepalese woman who supports children so they don't have to live behind bars with their incarcerated parents, was named the 2012 CNN Hero of the Year on Sunday night.
Nepal is one of the poorest countries, and space is very limited in the few group homes affiliated with the government. So when a parent is incarcerated and no other guardian can be found, children have little choice but to live in prison as well.
Basnet, 29, is determined to give these children another option.
She started a home in Kathmandu where children can receive education, food, medical care and a chance to live a more normal life. She also runs a day care program for children who are too young to be separated from their parent.
"These children have done nothing wrong. They are simply caught in something they do not understand," Basnet said during "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and honored her and the other top 10 CNN Heroes of 2012. "We want to work with the government to bring them all out from of prison. And they deserve a better future."
Since 2005, Basnet has helped more than 140 children through her nonprofit, the Early Childhood Development Center.Basnet was chosen as Hero of the Year through a nine-week public vote held on CNN.com. For being named CNN Hero of the Year, she receives $250,000 to continue her work. That is in addition to the $50,000 that each of the top 10 Heroes are receiving. When accepting the Hero of the Year award, Basnet relayed a message to incarcerated children in Nepal.
"Mamu's going to take you out from the prison, and you're coming to my place," said Basnet, who is called "Mamu" by many of the children. "This is for my children, and this is for my country Nepal. Thank you so much everybody who voted for me and who believed in my dream."This is the sixth year of the CNN Heroes campaign. In that time, more than 180 CNN H
eroes have been profiled on CNN, chosen from more than 45,000 nominations submitted through the CNN Heroes website. Each year, the campaign culminates with a live tribute show that brings together some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.
The celebrities who took part in this year's show included movie stars Susan Sarandon, Adrien Brody, Maria Bello, Viola Davis, Harvey Keitel and Josh Duhamel; athletes Jeff Gordon and Cullen Jones; and hip-hop artist 50 Cent. Television stars Rainn Wilson ("The Office"), Rico Rodriguez ("Modern Family"), Jane Lynch ("Glee"), Miranda Cosgrove ("iCarly") and David Spade ("Rules of Engagement") also participated.
There were two musical performances during the show. "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips performed "Home," and three-time Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo sang "Heroes."
In addition to receiving $50,000, this year's top 10 Heroes will also receive free training from the Annenberg Foundation, a leading supporter of nonprofits worldwide. Each Hero will receive a customized version of the Annenberg Alchemy program, which provides practical guidance on fundraising, communications, management and much more."We have found that the most effective nonprofits are like the CNN Heroes -- organizations with strong and visionary leaders and a bold, new approach to getting the job done," said Wallis Annenberg, the foundation's president, CEO and chairman of the board. "Our hope is that in supporting them -- especially smaller nonprofits, still struggling to survive and to thrive -- we will help them get wider attention and become models across the world."

Master plan for reducing child labour: PM
POST REPORT KATHMANDU, NOV 20
PRIME Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday urged the ministries concerned to endorse and effectively implement the National Policy on Child Rights. Addressing a programme organised by the Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Centre (CWIN) to mark the 25th year of the child rights movement, PM Bhattarai urged the ministries to implement the policy that ensures every child’s right to education, basic health and proper nutrition. Bhattarai asked all the stakeholders to work together with his government to protect and promote child rights. November 20 is marked as the International Children’s Rights Day, to commemorate the ratification of the Children’s Rights Convention by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989. The child rights movement in Nepal started in 1987, with CWIN playing a leading role. While children’s access to education has increased and the admission rate in the primary level has reached 95.1 percent, the fact that five percent of children are still deprived of proper schooling is a cause for concern, said Bhattarai. “There are still challenges for qualitative health and education and the present status of child labour in the country,” he said. Bhattarai said that the government had amended its 10-year work plan on child rights and was planning to endorse a master plan on reducing child labour. “A work plan to rehabilitate children affected by the 10-year conflict has been prepared,” said Bhattarai while assuring childfriendly local governance, national policy and procedures for its implementation and also designating schools as a “zone of peace”.
